Working Through Grief Group
If you have suffered a significant loss in your life, and are having difficulty putting the pieces of your life back together, Hospice can help. Bereavement Coordinator Jessica Bohndorf has established a support group that will begin Thursday, July 25th at 6:00pm.
Life must go on, and it may seem like others have left you behind in grief, while they continue to enjoy life. This disparity in your emotions as they compare with others can sting; and you may need to share these emotions without the perception that you're burdening those around you. This is not uncommon and great comfort can be found when you surround yourself with others who feel as you do and also need to talk about their grief.
The support group will meet the 4th Thursday of each month from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the Hospice office at 21 Hayes Street in Norwich. If you have questions about the group, or want to RSVP for this free support group, please contact Jessica Bohndorf at 334-3556.
Friends Campaign Underway
Be on the look out for the Hospice Friends Campaign literature in your mailboxes. You will have the opportunity to read about four exceptional patients we're currently caring for, or have cared for. You'll also learn how they've taken advantage of our unique Vet to Vet volunteer support program, as well as our Legacy program. Each year we ask individuals to help Hospice fill the 20% gap between what we're reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers. If you feel that Hospice care should remain available to all Chenango County residents who need our assistance, please consider a donation to the cause.

Autumn is the time of year that we begin to think of upcoming holidays and celebrations. As you are planning for the months ahead, plan on spending an evening of celebration and tribute on Thursday, November 7th at the Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County’s Annual Dinner and Auction at the Canasawacta Country Club in Norwich. The event is held during November in recognition of National Hospice Month and to provide us the opportunity to honor this year’s Hospice Heroes.
Guests will have the opportunity to start their holiday shopping, bidding on nearly one hundred items on the silent auction table. “We ask individuals and businesses to donate something special for our auction and each year we are overwhelmed with the responses,” said the agency’s Executive Director, Patricia Outhouse. “Among the many items this year are a 1-week Blue Ridge Mountain Log Cabin Retreat and a 1-Year Adult Membership to the YMCA of Norwich.”
Celebrity Waiters will host tables and work for guest tips that they donate to Hospice. The Celebrity Waiters become very competitive, trying to best their fellow waiters. It’s a fun and friendly competition! The waiters have raised as much as $2500 in the past.
The heart and soul of the evening is the public recognition of the 2013 Hospice Heroes. These are the outstanding family and community members who have gone over and above what is called upon them in the service of a Hospice patient or the agency. Hospice has selected two families, plus Jeffrey Bagley, Licensed Funeral Director of C.H. Landers Funeral Home and Joe Sugar and Marc Yerton, Hospice Veteran Volunteers.
“Even if you have never needed or used the services of Hospice, there are several reasons to attend the event,” says Patricia Outhouse. “It is an evening full of fun and camaraderie and you may be the winner of an awesome auction item; but most importantly, you’ll learn a lot about an agency that is woven into the fabric of our communities and serves hundreds of Chenango County residents every year.”
If you would like to reserve a seat or a table and support Hospice and applaud its Heroes, call their office at 334-3556, return the Annual Dinner Invitation to Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County, 21 Hayes Street, Norwich, NY 13815.
